History of The Springfield Club.

On May 22, 1953, eleven men met at the old Urban League Building at 15th and Monroe Streets and formed the charter that organized the Springfield Club of Frontiers International.

The names of those men are G.B. Winston, Albert Harris, Edwin A. Lee, Sylvester Carter, Charles Young, Winfred Helm, George Jefferson, Albert Smith, Alvin Roundtree and T.E. Finley. The club now numbers 22 members, which includes 7 honorary members.

Community Involvement.

The club's principle of "advancement through service" has as a prime role the mission of harnessing the cooperative influence of community and directing that influence. towards solutions to major issues Lhat are civic, social and racial. In addition to involvement in numerous community related projects, the club fully supports the Frontiers International Foundation Inc. The Foundation was established as the successor to National Vitiligo Foundation.

For more than thirty years Vitiligo was the exclusive national project of the Frontiers International Clubs. In October, 1986 the members of the National Vitiligo Foundation resolved to become more responsive to the total needs of the community.

Therefore, an expansion of purpose and the creation of the Frontiers International Foundation Inc. was deemed necessary.

The Foundation now supports medical education, research and treatment into the areas of Sickle Cell Anemia, Hypertension, Cancer, AIDS and other diseases that are prevalent among African-American people.

In addition the Foundation sponsors cultural, educational, social, economic, health care and charitable activities, with the primary aim of improving the quality of life of all persons.

Dr.Martin Luther King Jr's Breakfast.

Springfield Frontiers also sponsors the Annual Martin Luther King memorial Breakfast in Springfield, Illinois to keep alive the following:

  • Remind our community of the ideals which guided the late Dr. King, and the actions which accompanied his pursuit of equal rights for all citizens;
  • preserve in our memories and instill in the minds of others that the struggle toward worthy goals, against great odds, is not futile, but may succeed without loss of honor;
  • and attest to all that we embrace those concepts for which Martin Luther King, Jr., lived and died.
